South Africa’s Springbok Women will measure their progress against a familiar opponent when they host Ireland in two Tests at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town, the first on Saturday 24 October at 15:00 local time (14:00 in Brazzaville) and the second at the same venue on 31 October. The series arrives straight after wins over Italy and Spain on a European tour, and it will test two things at once: how far the South Africans have come against the same opposition, and how quickly they can adapt from one Test to the next.
Delivery up front is the immediate concern. Babalwa Latsha is out with an ankle injury, and Nombuyekezo Mdliki misses the series after suffering a rib injury against Spain. That has forced the selectors to rebuild the balance of the scrum. Xoliswa Khuzwayo shifts from loosehead prop, where she played against Spain, to tighthead. Sanelisiwe Charlie returns at No 1 after being rested in Seville, and Anushka Groenewald keeps her place at hooker. Thandile Mazwi sits on the bench to bolster the front row if needed.
The captaincy also changes hands. Sizophila Solontsi takes over as captain, with Unam Tose as vice-captain, a pair that had already shared the role in the win over Italy. Behind the scrum, Maria Tshiremba replaces Patience Mokone on the left wing, while the half-back pairing of Tose and Byrhandré Dolf stays intact. The operational challenge is clear: keep the cohesion built up on the European tour while absorbing the changes forced up front.
Meanwhile, the replacements bench offers its own flexibility. Aphiwe Ngwevu can cover both the centres and the back row, giving South Africa a player able to fill two different areas as the match unfolds. There is a milestone in the mix too. Yonela Ngxingolo starts on the bench with 49 caps, and if she comes on she will become the second South African woman to reach 50 Tests, after Nolusindiso Booi. For the prop, the occasion means more than the result, though her fiftieth appearance cannot be taken for granted until she actually takes the field.
Ireland arrive with their own structure settled. Scott Bemand has confirmed Erin King as captain, with Emily Lane and Dannah O’Brien forming the half-back pairing and Béibhinn Parsons starting on the wing. Hooker Neve Jones, a starter with 49 caps, is also in line to reach 50 Tests.
For the Springbok Women, the value of the two matches lies in execution rather than planning. The compact series leaves little time between diagnosis and response on the pitch, so the side will need to build on the good spells from the tour without waiting for the second game to put their mistakes right.
