Editorial Standards
Voices of Southern Africa, Stories that Matter
Southern Africa Chronicle is dedicated to producing journalism that serves the public interest through rigorous reporting, ethical conduct, and unwavering commitment to truth. Our editorial standards guide all content decisions and reflect our responsibility to readers, sources, and the communities we cover.
Accuracy and Verification
Accuracy is non-negotiable. Every factual claim in our reporting undergoes verification before publication. Our journalists consult primary sources, official documents, and expert interviews to establish facts independently. We distinguish clearly between verified information, reasonable inferences, and speculation. When reporting on sensitive or contested issues, we present multiple perspectives fairly while maintaining our obligation to report truth accurately. We acknowledge the limitations of our knowledge and avoid false certainty. Statistical claims, quotes, and attributions are verified before publication. We correct errors promptly and transparently when they occur.
Sourcing and Attribution
Strong sourcing is the foundation of credible journalism. We attribute information clearly to named sources whenever possible. When sources request anonymity, we grant it only when the information is significant and unavailable through other means, and only after determining the source's reliability and motivations. We explain to readers why sources are anonymous and what we know about their position to speak on the subject. We maintain detailed records of our sources and reporting methodology. We do not publish information from anonymous sources making serious allegations without substantial corroboration from additional sources or documentation.
Independence and Conflicts of Interest
Our journalists maintain independence from political, commercial, and personal interests that could compromise their reporting. Staff members disclose potential conflicts of interest to editors before covering related stories. We do not accept gifts, favors, or benefits from sources that could create obligations or appearance of bias. Our journalists do not engage in advocacy for political causes or candidates while employed by Southern Africa Chronicle. We maintain distance from subjects we cover and avoid relationships that could compromise objectivity. Our ownership structure and funding sources are transparent to readers.
Corrections and Accountability
When we publish information that is subsequently found to be inaccurate, we correct it promptly and transparently. Corrections are clearly labeled and published prominently. We maintain a searchable corrections archive accessible to all readers. We explain what was incorrect and provide accurate information. For significant errors, we conduct internal reviews to identify how the error occurred and implement measures to prevent recurrence. Readers can report errors through our dedicated corrections process, and we investigate all credible claims of inaccuracy.
Artificial Intelligence Disclosure
Southern Africa Chronicle uses AI tools to support our journalism, including research assistance, data analysis, and content organization. We disclose AI involvement in our reporting when it materially affects how readers should evaluate the information. We do not use AI to generate news articles, conduct interviews, or make editorial judgments. All AI-assisted content undergoes human editorial review and verification. We are transparent about AI limitations and maintain human accountability for all published content.
Reader Trust and Transparency
Our readers' trust is our most valuable asset. We earn trust through consistent accuracy, transparency about our methods, and accountability when we fall short. We welcome reader feedback, questions, and corrections. We explain our editorial decisions when appropriate and engage respectfully with readers who disagree with our coverage. We are transparent about our ownership, funding, and business model. We do not allow commercial or political interests to influence our editorial judgment. Our commitment to these standards is unwavering.
